A view of the world from the eyes of a human being...

Reporting in from the 2010 Iditarod in Anchorage, Alaska, where our very own reporter calls home, we welcome Robin Rosay.

Iditarod Report #2 -- Monday, March 08, 2010 5:47 PM

There will be a lot of leap frogging going on in the early part of the race, as always happens. New race leader, Paul Gebhardt is at the Rainy Pass checkpoint, 133 miles into the race. GPS map shows Aily Zirkle three miles behind Gebhardt, traveling about 7.5 miles per hour. Linwood Fiedler is only a mile behind Aily, traveling at 7.7 miles per hour.

Just to compare the lag time between the GPS system and the official race current standings chart, here is where the chart thinks people are: Gebhardt, 1st in Rainy Pass. Schnuelle, 2nd into Finger Lake. GPS says he's 9 places behind the leader. Chart says John Baker is 3rd. His GPS shows him 5 mushers and one mile behind Schnuelle. You get the picture. So I'm putting my money on the GPS system.

A young musher to keep an eye on this year is Dallas Seavey. His grandfather Dan ran in the inaugural Iditarod in 1973. Father Mitch won in 2004. Dallas came in a very impressive 6th place last year. GPS map shows him currently in 8th place, just one mile ahead of Lance Mackey.

Anchorage's most recognizable mascots - Freedom Frog.

In our first photo today we see one of Anchorage's most recognizable mascots - Freedom Frog. His job is to promote recovery from substance abuse and addiction. A noble cause for one so green.

Second photo today is a member from the Linwood Fiedler camp starting to hook the dogs up for their run down 4th Avenue and into the woodsy trails of Anchorage. Fiedler has run the Iditarod 17 times before, placing as high as second. He is from Willow, AK Linwood is currently resting at the Rainy Pass Checkpoint.

Billy Snodgrass of DuBois, WY.

Third photo of this report belongs to Billy Snodgrass of DuBois, WY. This is Billy's third Iditarod and hasn't been here in ten years. When not mushing, Snodgrass owns a dog food company. He is currently in 61st place.

Happy trails . . . Robin
