A view of the world from the eyes of a
human being...
Reporting in from the 2008 Iditarod in Anchorage, Alaska, where our
very own reporter calls home, we welcome Robin Rosay.
Iditarod Update #17
Lance Mackey and his team of 11 dogs crossed under the burled arch in
Nome this morning at 2:46 a.m. From start to finish, this was the race
that Lance had to work the hardest to win. To claim victory he had to
play nurse, caregiver, coach, strategist, athlete and dog driver.
Though he averaged 4.8 miles per hour in the last 22 miles of the race,
Lance was still able to add 22 minutes to the 57 minute lead he had on
Jeff King coming out of White Mountain.
It took a minor miracle for Lance to even get the 57 minute jump on
Jeff. That happened in Elim, where Lance pretended to bed the dogs
down, even going so far as to fire up his cook stove to look like he was
settling into the checkpoint. Not a normal coffee drinker, Lance had a
couple cups and was wired. He and Jeff both laid down to take a quick
nap. In a post-race interview Lance said he laid there and jittered for
about fifteen minutes until he heard Jeff snore, then he was up and out
the door. He was hoping for just a 30 minute lead, but was rewarded
with almost an hour.
Lance made some big money with this giant check for $69,000 from Wells Fargo Bank.

Lance and Hansom share a moment of love and gratitude in the winner's
circle in Nome.
The clock says I have to get on with the rest of my normal pre-work
activities, but I promise, there will be at least a few more reports on
the way.
