A view of the world from the eyes of a
human being...
Reporting in from the 2008 Iditarod in Anchorage, Alaska, where our
very own reporter calls home, we welcome Robin Rosay.
Iditarod Update #3
Well . . . a new leader has emerged in the seven hours that I slept.
Mitch Seavey, '04 champion, has made it to the front of the pack.
Mackey, King and Backen - the top three before I went to bed, are now in
9th, 10th and 11th places respectively. They are in the Takotna check
point, noted for it's good food with hospitality to match. Mackey has
been there nearly ten hours. The other two even longer, so this may in
fact be where some 24 hour stops are taken. None of the 92 mushers left
in the race have completed either the mandatory 8 or 24 yet.
This morning's race stats show a lot of action in the middle of the
pack. Seven racers have improved their positions, including two
rookies. I've been keeping my eye on our likely Rookie of the Year, but
I'm not ready to report on him yet.
Musher Cliff Roberson, a neurosurgeon from Corvallis, Oregon has
scratched at the Rohn checkpoint. I haven't seen anything anywhere to
explain why.
The first photo in this report I am guessing are some of Jeff Deeter's
family. There is a strong resemblance to Jeff's photo that appeared in
the Daily News' musher bio spread this past Saturday.
Second photo is
Rachael Scdoris of Bend, Oregon. This is her third Iditarod. She had
to scratch her first try due to sick dogs. The second attempt she came
in a respectable 57th place. Rachael is currently in 74th place.
The
last photo was taken on the Campbell Air Strip, the tail end of the 11
mile ceremonial start route. The musher is rookie Liz Parrish of
Klamath Falls, Oregon.
