A view of the world from the eyes of a
human being...
Reporting in from the 2008 Iditarod in Anchorage, Alaska, where our
very own reporter calls home, we welcome Robin Rosay.
Iditarod Update #2
It's really in my best interest that the Iditarod only happens once a
year. It's all I can think about. I checked race stats right after I
woke up this morning. I checked race stats right before I went to work
this evening. I checked race stats half way through my shift - and I
work for the newspaper! Race stats were updated once at work, and now
I'm on the computer again checking them.
Things are going to get interesting real soon. Current race leader,
Lance Mackey is only 85 miles from the halfway point. Mushers often stop
there for their mandatory 24 hour rest. Mackey, Jeff King and Norwegian
Kjetil Backen are all running neck and neck. Reports are that their
dogs are all still pretty spunky. Strategy will play a huge part in
winning the race this year. That and no mistakes. There is a lot of
leap-frogging going on right now. I think the real race starts after
the mushers have taken both their 8 hour and 24 hour mandatory rests.
Today's first photo will give you a sense of where all the action
begins.
The second photo is of a portion of Blake Freking's team. He
is from Finland, Minnesota, and used to be a dog handler for four-time
champ Martin Buser. Blake's wife is also in the race this year as a
rookie.
Third photo is Bruce Linton of Kasilof, Alaska. This is his
second Iditarod.
More tomorrow.
