A view of the world from the eyes of a
human being...
Reporting in from the 2008 Iditarod in Anchorage, Alaska, where our
very own reporter calls home, we welcome Robin Rosay.
Iditarod Update #1
Good news and bad news already from the Iditarod front. Musher GB Jones
(your first picture today) scratched from the race after reaching
Campbell Airstrip after the ceremonial start. Cabela's reporter Jon
Little wrote that this was announced at the musher's pre-race banquet.
Not only did Jones scratch from the race, but is retiring from racing as
well. This is due to a previous illness.
Depending on who you are, this could be considered good news and bad
news. Montana musher and four-time Iditarod winner Doug Swingley has
retired from distance racing. He and wife Melanie Shirilla are into
stage racing. Apparently she is quite good at it.
This next item could be considered good news and bad news, too. The
first notorious part of the trail on the way to Rainy Pass, the Happy
River Gorge, turned out to be much better than anticipated, at least for
the race leaders. It's being reported this morning that after the first
seventy or eighty mushers had gone through, the trail turned into super
deep ruts with eight foot walls of snow on the sides. Nothing like a
good adrenaline rush first thing in the morning!
The second of today's photos are dogs from Laura Daugereau's
team. She is from Port Gamble, WA. Laura is currently in 65th place.
The last photo is of Norway's Sigrid Ekran coming down the Cordova Street hill. She was '07's rookie of the year. She and Aily Zirkle are battling it out over who has the most beautiful smile. Sigrid is currently in 23rd place, Aily in 22nd.
More to come...
