Reporting in from the 2008 Iditarod in Anchorage, Alaska, where our very own reporter calls home, we welcome Robin Rosay.

Pre-Iditarod Events #2

Hi Everyone,

I'm just about ready to start reporting on the Iditarod. I've been snooping around on some of the websites. I was worried that the GPS tracking website might spoil some of the fun, but it has had the opposite effect. It's going to drive me crazy. I decided to update real quick while typing this and found four-time Iditarod champ Jeff King and four-time Yukon Quest and one-time Iditarod champ Lance Mackey in the same place according to the listing. The map actually had King ahead.

I just wanted to mention a few more things that made Fur Rendezvous a lot of fun. This year the guy who runs the reindeer farm brought a dozen animals to town for an event called Running of the Reindeer. It was modeled after Spain's Running of the Bulls. Reportedly 20,000 people turned out to watch the event. A friend and I were squished into the crowd and really couldn't see much or get good pictures.

A big part of Rondy is the carnival. I believe the temperatures were in the 20's when I took the photo of the carnival ride. That was a weird one. It was kind of a pendulum that swung back and forth until it finally made a circle all the way around.

The snow sculptures are always fun, too. There's a wide range of "expertise" when it comes to the sculptures. I guess, like any competition, some teams are more competitive than others. The photo I sent was of the People's Choice award winner. The group won the opportunity to compete in a sculpting contest in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

Finally, on my walk this afternoon I came across this moose off in the brush. On our side of town the moose are very tolerant of humans, especially when they're busy eating.

Next time . . . The Iditarod.
