Reporting in from the 2008 Iditarod in Anchorage, Alaska, where our
very own reporter calls home, we welcome Robin Rosay.
Pre-Iditarod Events
I know the Iditarod is huge, but Alaska has another large event that
leads up to the race. It's the Fur Rendezvous and dates back to the
time when trappers and miners would come to Anchorage once each year to
sell their wares.
Now, of course, it's about more than trapping and mining. Besides the
big fur auctions downtown, there are lots of events and things for young
and old alike to do. There is always something interesting in the
crowd, like the Air Force mascot in the first photo.
The first weekend of Rondy I went downtown for the Outhouse Races. The
second photo pictures the Royal Flush entry with the Queen on her throne
and the royal court powering the sled.
While I imagine most people who visit this website are dog folks, I
realize there are some who have cats, too. Well, the Fur Rendezvous
festival caters to cat lovers as well, with the annual Purr Rondy Cat
Show. I don't go every year, but it had been a while, so I went again
with one of my cat loving buddies. So for all the cat lovers out there,
I give you the unique hairless Sphinx cat.
