A view of the world from the eyes of a
human being...
Reporting in from the 2006 Iditarod in Anchorage, Alaska, where our
very own reporter calls home, we welcome Robin Rosay.
Idit - day 13
Hi There!
I have what should be a big surprise for you today. I really wanted to
send a picture of the race winner, but didn't have one, so I did the
next best thing. What I neglected to tell you the other day is that
while I was watching the winner come into Nome at the Daily News, I was
recording it at home. My bright idea was to take pictures of the TV
screen and send that. Just like any other photographic endeavor, timing
is everything. I ended up taking around 50 pictures and whittled it
down to what you're getting tonight plus a few others that will be funny
to the newspaper folks. That's actually what I was doing last night in
between checking the sky for aurora and keeping an eye on the moose in
the neighbor's yard. It's a wonder I get any sleep at all.
There are only 29 mushers left to get into Nome. Twelve of them are
rookies. The closest one is only 22 miles away. The furthest away is
still 260 miles away. The last guy gets a red lantern for a prize. The
prize money sounds really big until you learn that it costs a musher
somewhere around $30,000 to run the race. All their food, the dog's
food, and other stuff they need gets flown to each check point in
advance of their arrival. Now think of the Norwegians. They have the
same expenses as local mushers, plus the cost of getting themselves and
20 dogs to and from the U.S. All that so they can travel in the wind,
snow and freezing cold for nearly two weeks. Crazy, huh?
Today's first photo is me with race winner Jeff King. He also became
the oldest person to ever win the race. He turned 50 last month.
Second photo is Jeff with his giant (literally and figuratively) check
for $69,000.
Third photo is Jeff and the Anchorage Chrysler Dodge boys with Jeff's
new $45,000 truck.
The last photo is Jeff with his two lead dogs, Salem and Bronte.
I really have to be in bed in half an hour. Take care. More tomorrow.
