A view of the world from the eyes of a
human being...
Reporting in from the 2006 Iditarod in Anchorage, Alaska, where our
very own reporter calls home, we welcome Robin Rosay.
Idit - day 11
Hi There!
When I got home from work tonight there was (and still is) a moose in
the neighbor's yard. I'd love to be on the front porch when it cuts
through our yard, but then I couldn't get this note out. I'm really torn.
Last night at work was awesome. Jeff King took his time on the trail
and reached Nome at 1:11 a.m. I watched it on the TV in the editorial
department. Then the place really came alive. The writer was in front
of the TV taking notes so he could update the story that was printing.
The photos were being sent electronically, then were chosen by the head
of that department. My co-worker (and friend) Rob and I got the updated
pages ready for the press. When I left work at 2:30 a.m., there were
four cars waiting to pick up papers, literally hot off the press, to
take to the news stands around town. The update was too late for home
delivery.
I heard a noise outside and went out on the porch. The moose was gone.
I think it left the same way it came and didn't cut through the yard.
Same thing happened last time I saw a moose in their yard.
I haven't even checked race stats tonight. The last update at work had
the first 21 or 22 mushers into Nome. Rookie of the year is going to go
to a Norwegian for the second year in a row.
First photo tonight is that big moose in the neighbor's yard. I took
the photo from my office window.
Second photo tonight is a fella named Gary Paulson. He's written a
couple books. One is called "My Life in Dog Years". He's 66 years old
and was the first person to drop out of the race this year.
Third photo today is Tove Sorensen from Tromso, Norway. If her husband
is a gentleman, he'll let her sneak ahead of him and take the Rookie of
the Year Honor. *Hang on . . . I'll check the stats right now!*
I cannot believe this! This couple has been the top ranked rookies for
probably five days. Now another rookie is
two places ahead and according to the time he left the last checkpoint,
should be pulling into Nome any minute now.
Now I have to check the webcam. To make matters worse - it's twenty
minutes to bedtime. Now you know why I hate to go to bed at night!!

Sledding anyone?
