A view of the world from the eyes of a
human being...
Reporting in from the 2006 Iditarod in Anchorage, Alaska, where our
very own reporter calls home, we welcome Robin Rosay.
Idit - day 10
Hi There!
I've got to make this a quick one. On Tuesdays I go to work two hours
earlier than normal so I can take a two hour break in the evening for a
meeting. Jeff King is expected to win the race sometime between 12:30
a.m. and 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning. I was invited to be one of the
two people who sit around and collect some big-bucks overtime money to
wait for him to win so they can get it in the morning paper. I said
yes, of course.
It looks like the arrogant Montana musher will come in second. Third
place is still up for grabs between the race sweetheart, DeeDee Jonrowe
and Paul Gebhardt, the guy who lost his entire team early in the race.
They are only separated by about seven minutes, certainly enough time
for Gebhardt to overtake DeeDee at some point in the next 100 miles.
First photo today is probably the absolute best photo (quality wise)
that I've ever taken. I was so thrilled I forgot to notice which team
he came from. He was getting ready to let out a big bark.
Second photo is Tollef Monson of Kotzebue, Alaska coming down the
Cordova Street hill into the park..
Third photo is Dave Sawatzky of Healy, Alaska. A few days ago one of
his dogs died on the trail. Sometimes it's ulcers, sometimes they cough
stuff and aspirate it back into their lungs. The race loses at least
one dog every year. This year it's been three. Always sad.
Hind sight is always 20 - 20, of course. Now I wished I'd have taken a
picture of Jeff King when I was at the ceremonial start just so I could
send it around. Just goes to show you can never really predict the winner.

Sledding anyone?
