Adventures in Sledding and Skijoring with Piper:
Dear Nancy,
I'm feeling kind of sad. All the wonderful white stuff on the ground is turning into
puddles! This winter I had soooooo much fun playing in it.
The best thing that I did this winter
was dog sledding. Blur & I went to try out dog sledding with the Snowstorm
sledding & carting club in January. We got hooked up to a sled with two lead
dogs and all of a sudden we had to run or get dragged-it was actually quite spooky but we
survived. (Check out the photo of our very first run, I'm on the far side and Blur's the
one with the "flying paws" on the close side). A little bit later they hooked us
up a second time and I clued in-they actually want us to pull! Oh happy
day! Finally I'm getting rewarded for pulling! I easily became addicted
to this new sport. Oh how I love to pull and run! From then on, every
Saturday, we'd go and meet our new friends, all sorts of Siberian Huskies, Samoyeds &
Alaskan Huskies and go pull that sled. Sometimes there would be just 4 of us pulling
and sometimes up to 10 dogs!
We entered our first fun race in Prescott in February. Mom got to
drive the sled for the first time. She did okay even though she tipped the sled once
and was late getting to the starting line... We even managed to come in 5th
out of 20 teams. Not bad for a couple of scrawny border collies and a borrowed
Siberian and Alaskan Klee Klai!
Koltrane (Piper's
flyball buddy) decided to come out with us after that. He's strong and loves to pull
too. He's running really well now although he really hates getting tangled up in the
lines. If he gets tangled, he just sits down and cries until someone untangles
him. We are hoping to get a team of 4 border collies ready for next season.
During the week we train by going out skijoring. Skijoring is where I put on my
harness and mom attaches me to her special belt with a bungee line and a quick release
mechanism and I pull her while she's on skis. I also go out once a week with Blur's
mom and she has Blur & I pull her together.
I'm going out for one last skijor with Blur tomorrow. There's not much snow left,
but hopefully there will be enough to ski on. REM, our flyball friend, is going to
try skijoring tomorrow too. We are hoping that he'll join our team for next year.
I've asked for my very own dog sled for my birthday. I hope I get
one! I can't wait for the snow to come back, but I also can't wait for the grass to
return so that I can do agility outdoors! Mom says I'm too impatient, I tell her,
I'm a border collie, I'm supposed to be impatient.
Woof!
