A view of the world from the eyes of a human being...

Reporting in from the 2010 Iditarod in Anchorage, Alaska, where our very own reporter calls home, we welcome Robin Rosay.

Iditarod Report #1 -- Monday, March 08, 2010 2:15 AM

So pleased to be back again to report on the 2010 Iditarod. As always, it was controlled chaos downtown. I know it was a big year for Canada, hosting the Winter Olympics and all. So my first photos in this report will feature only Canadians and/or Canadian dogs.

Since the actual race is only about seven hours old, there really isn't much to report. I can, however, fill you up with some statistics that you might find interesting.

71 mushers started the race. 49 of those mushers are veterans. 22 of those mushers are rookies. Of those 71 mushers, 46 are from Alaska, 13 are from other U.S. states, and 12 are from foreign countries. Canada can be proud of 8 of those 12 foreign mushers.

A dog from the team of Hank Debruin, of
Haliburton, Ontario.

In the first photo today we see a dog from the team of Hank Debruin, of Haliburton, Ontario. Hank is a rookie this year and when home, runs a Siberian Husky touring business. He is currently in 37th place.

Sebastian Schnuelle at the top of the hill
at 15th and Cordova streets.

In our second photo we find Sebastian Schnuelle at the top of the hill at 15th and Cordova streets. Here there is a short, steep hill that changes the ceremonial route from city streets to well-groomed ski trails. Schnuelle came in second in last year's Iditarod and is also a Yukon Quest veteran. He is from Whitehorse, Yukon Territories. He is currently in 24th place.

Warren Palfrey of Quesnel, British Columbia.

The last photo of the day shows the staging area for musher Warren Palfrey of Quesnel, British Columbia. Warren is running his fourth Iditarod, with his best being 19th place last year. He is currently in 16th place.

 Happy trails . . . Robin

Sledding anyone?
