A
view of the world from the eyes of another english springer spaniel...
Reporting in from numerous events around the area we welcome "Topher".
Introduction:
About the Owner:
Name: Morgan Haney
Title:Dog
Trainer
What
got me into training:
After failing Fostering 101 (adopting a rescue) I kept a tiny little
cocker/doxie mix who soon came to have plenty of bad habits. My mom
threatened to take her from me and adopt her out unless I trained
her. I was on "house arrest" until at least one
problem was solved. I ended up taking it a little too far and
trained JP (Jewel's Precious) to do everything Topher is now able to
do and more. JP died suddenly after being hit by a car. She
was searching for her "momma" who left her for a weekend.
She is dearly missed but will always stay in my heart. I thank
her everyday for the things she has taught me.
Abilities: able
to train any dog the basic 5 (sit, come, down, wait,
heel) within 6 weeks, titled dogs in Conformation, to
train a dog for specific sports such as agility, flyball, freestyle,
rally-o, obedience, Frisbee...
Happiest
Moments:
Bringing a rescue home and watching them come alive after a single
bath. Watching little children or sweet little lady’s faces
light up and laughing at our performance.
Biggest
Brags: Finishing
a beagle named "Bagel" in Conformation;
training/owning/handling the first ever Springer in a Skyhoundz
(disc dog).
Why
dog training? Why not? Training a dog is something only few can do. Dogs
with training are absolutely amazing and continue to amaze you
without training.
How
do you train: I
use positive reinforcement where I re-direct the dog to do what I am
asking rather than correcting something he hasn’t done. I
usually train with clickers and/or food to being a new trick so
that they can get the idea right away with what I am asking. I
wean the food and clickers off slowly after I know the dog knows
what I am asking. If the dog doesn’t know what you are
asking he is doing nothing wrong.
Favourite
dog sport: Aqua
Launch. I don’t know why it just looks like lots of fun! Police
dogs are my favourite kind of dog, even though it isn’t considered
a "sport" the dogs are trained to do a job.
Favourite
sport to compete in: Agility. Beyond exciting this is something that not all dogs can do and when
the dog is able to listen to you and manoeuvre through
an obstacle course with only a single command--it is just amazing.
Going to nursing homes and hospitals is also fun to do for me.
Advice: DON'T
GIVE UP! The worst thing to do is to give up on a dog before
he even knows what he is doing. You must teach the dog English
(unless you know "woof") before you can yell at him for
doing something wrong.
