During 2000 Rita and Justin have been trialing down
south, collecting as many OTCH points, with the goal of being invited to the AKC Obedience
Invitational.
Here's a brief explanation of how the AKC Obedience Invitational works:
OTCH points are awarded to the 1st and 2nd placements in the AKC Open B
and Utility B Classes. (This year the schedule has been expanded to also include the 3rd
and 4th placements in bigger classes.) Rita and Justin went to 16 trials and ended up with
a total of 214 points for the year. This puts Justin as the 8th Border Collie and the 31st
All Breed for OTCh points for the year 2000! They have received the invitation to compete
at the 7th AKC Obedience National Invitational in Chicago in June 2001.
The AKC invites the top 10% of dogs with the most OTCH points of every breed. The format
of the tournament is rather unique in that each team has to perform six sets of routines,
each set being a mix of Open and Utility exercises. The teams will then be seeded and
those that advance to the 2nd round will go through another rigorous sudden-death
(head-to-head) competition. The final four will perform full Open and Utility exercises to
determine the top 4 placements. At the end, the winner will be crowned as the year's
National Obedience Champion (NOC).
On July 14, 2001, Justin earned another perfect 200
score in the AKC Open B class. This show was Champlain Valley Club in Burlington, VT and
the judge was Ken Nagler.
Justin also scored a couple of 199s in Utility and Open that weekend for
back-to-back HITs and High combined.
During the weekend of November 17 and 18th, 200l, Justin
earned his 3rd perfect 200 score (Open B) this weekend at a HUGE trial (56 entries in OB
and 48 in UB alone) Dauphin DOTC in PA!! The first time for the judge Ron Bausch.
Bytown
Dog Obedience Club Dog Show - 2002 HIT of HITS
The 8th Annual HIT of HITS at Bytown Dog Obedience Club Dog Show was a
wonderful event to watch. 23 Teams of competitors, all of whom had earned
a "High in Trial" in a Canadian Event in 2001 with a score over
195, came together to compete and to celebrate the sport of Dog Obedience.
Rita Susanto and her great dog Justin earned the title of HIT of HITS
Champion for the 4th time in 5 years!
Once again, here's Rita and Justin in Patty Ruzzo's Seminar at Frances Holme's "The
Training Hall" in Ottawa. They never stop
practicing! Keep up the great work! Congratulations to you both!
Rita started competitive obedience in 1986. Since then she has competed with three dogs
and won over 80 (AKC and CKC) HITS and HCs, World Series Obedience Championships as well
as the Ontario 1998 and 1999 BDOC HIT of HITS. Her first dog, OTCH Sandy, was the No. 4
Top Obedience Dog in Canada in 1989, while OTCH Stella earned a 200 in Open B.
Rita's current partner, Am/Can OTCH Whistlejack's Justin Time UDX, ADC, CGC, is the first
and only Canadian Dog to win obedience tournament championships (Top Dog Division at the
1999 World Series, Open division at the 1998 World Series and Heinz Pup-peroni USA Central
Regional Obedience Championships). Justin has also scored a perfect "200" from
the AKC Utility ring, and recently became the fourth Canadian dog to earn the AKC OTCH in
a total of 13 trials.

My news...
Dear Justin:
It was by fate that I found you about 13 years ago in Williams Lake – they called you the little Brat; sweet and determined with a touch of independence. I named you Justin Time for you were born just before the CKC closed its door to the border collies.
I knew from the very beginning that you were going to be my great one – ever so quick to learn, intelligent and willing. From a rambunctious pup you grew through shy adolescence that blossom into a confident dog with just enough cockiness that I love. Along the way, we continued to hone our skills and were lucky enough to study under the tutelage of some of the bests in the obedience world.
Together we traveled far and wide to dance in the obedience rings – it was awesome. You took me for a ride of a lifetime, introduced me to some of the nicest people I would not have met otherwise and gave me highs that I did not even dare to dream. Who would expect to be the Novice Best in Blue on the very first tournament; Top Dog 1st at the World Series 1999; 200 score on the very first try in the AKC utility ring; 4 times crowned as Ontario BDOC Hit of Hits competitions; 13 trials to earn AKC OTCH; invited twice to the AKC National Obedience Invitational and more. You spoiled me, made me looked good, and boy, am I glad you did! But above everything, you were a devoted companion, a beloved family member and a big bro to Danika – that’s our Justin.
I wish the dance would go on and you would be mine to hold forever, but alas everything has to come to an end. I supposed God needs a little border collie with a huge heart, who herds sewers and stalks door stoppers, to be by his side. You fought the illnesses hard and furious as you did everything else and even winning a few rounds. But it was just too much and too quick. When your once nimble body started to fail, and eating and drinking became a struggle, I had to let you go. Sandy, Stella, Shaker, Quinn, Nori and Mercy will show you the way at the Bridge. Maybe there are a few sheep for you to herd there.
That’ll do and above all, Thank-you my sweet Justin for all that you have done. It was an honor to have had you as a partner – ‘till we meet again.
With all my love, now and forever,
Rita - your Mom, friend and partner
