Wrentham weekend - Thanks for the tips

Hi All,

I wanted to send a big thank you to all of you that sent me suggestions on how to get Hunter-boy to move in the ring. In case you hadn't followed the thread a couple of weeks ago, I needed help to get Hunter to move in the ring. At a recent show, he seemed sluggish and really not into it, he lacked focus and really wasn't "showing".

After I received several suggestions from the list, we started to train for the New England Specialty. I had to get Hunter to have fun in the ring.....then his true personality would show. For the past couple of weeks, I've been clicker training basic obedience with Molly and Hunter together, then slipping in our show routine exercises. The training sessions were up to 30 minutes after work each day and very very positive. Shortly into the training, he really changed his tune.....he was having fun. Last week, he was moving much better in our show routine.....heck, even Molly was enjoying the show routine work. (Carol and I are going to enter Molly in the altered class at the Canadian OES Specialty this August.). By the end of the week, Hunter would go around the ring beside us while Molly was "showing" and kind of show her the way. Now, the only question was would this new & improved attitude carry over into the real show ring ?

We arrived at the site in Wrentham early Saturday morning and it was pouring. This was an outdoor show and the grounds were pretty muddy in parts. By the time 12:15 rolled around, Hunter was all groomed and set to go in the ring. The rain and wind had stepped up since we first arrived. I was watching the other handlers going around the ring to get a feel for the footing.....or should I say "splashing". Hunter seemed to be in good spirits (He got to meet Grannie Annie who caught him sleeping while we were working on his head). As we went into the ring and setup, he was good.....he was focused and stacked nicely. Now the moment of truth....the "down & back". Good boy Hunter....let's go.... start slowly.....show the judge your "Rollingview"...now let's pick it up. He was fine.....he moved quite nicely.....I don't think he noticed the rain. He got Reserve Winner. The fact that he moved well was huge win for me.

Sunday turned out a bit better for us. As I've heard over & over since entering the show world "another day, another judge....anything can happen". Hunter had me worried though, he passed on breakfast, wouldn't eat anything while I was prepping him, was ignoring me and just seemed tired. He perked up a bit just as his head was being done. Several laps around the ring later and we walked away with Best of Winners and his second 4-point major. I was very proud of the young lad......he moved nicely, and is really starting to show.

All in all, it was a great weekend. We met quite a few of the other OES people (and did quite well at the OES Specialty raffle). I must say that those OES cupcakes seemed to make all the rain and mud disappear.....man, those were good.

Thanks again for the tips & suggestions.....and a big thanks to Grannie Annie for coming down to join us.

Doug
