Puppy of the Year - Results
Before we leave for vacation, I thought I'd submit my report for the Puppy of the Year
competition last weekend at the Credit Valley show in Brampton, Ontario. Dogs that won a
Best Puppy in Show during the past twelve months are eligible to enter this competition.
Our very own Hunter-man took a Best Puppy in Show last May in his last show as a puppy.
Well, we didn't get to go to that show. We continued with our handling classes and
practiced as much as we could at home. Molly is a pretty good distraction so that helped.
Carol and I packed up Hunter and Molly last Thursday then headed down the 401 for a 6 hour
drive. We stayed with Carol's cousin who lives about 30 minutes from the show site. They
have a golden retriever, so they're use to dogs and lots of hair.
The next day, we woke up to 10 inches of fresh snow and the roads were an absolute mess.
The snow was nice and clean, so Hunter didn't get too messed up when we let him out. The
drive to the show was a bit slow but not really a problem. We entered the regular
conformation to get some practice before the big show that night. To my delight, the male
special that won the OES specialty was entered all three days. Needless to say, he took
the breed all three days in the conformation ring. Fortunately, despite the lack of ring
practice, Hunter moved quite nicely in the ring and stacked well.
However, Carol mentioned that Hunter (19 months) looked young out there. His butt coat
wasn't staying up. I called Barb to get some help. She said to take a wide tooth comb and
pull the butt coat up and away from the skin. With two hours to go before the start of the
Puppy of the Year Comp, I started working on his butt. Wow, what a difference that made.
The puppy of the year competition is quite good. There are six judges and everyone is in
formal attire. I bought a new suit last week (now I have two......my wedding suit and the
new one). The first round is for the group. Each dog is examined by two judges. I must say
that the judges really took their time going over the dogs. There was another Old English
competing for bragging rights. We met the owner earlier that day. He came in from
Edmonton, Alberta and has won 15 Best puppy in shows during the past year and by the looks
of it, he didn't have a sister that chews coat. Yes, I was feeling the pressure. Did I
mention that Hunter's sister from a previous litter won the Puppy of the Year competition
in '98 ?? Yes, I was under the gun.
As the first judge was going over Hunter, he mentioned that he use to raise OES and at one
point had 20 in full coat. Then added, he was insane back then (I just nodded my head in
agreement). The second judge, looked at his bite, then checked out the back teeth as well.
I'd never seen that and asked her. She said it's amazing what you can find by looking all
around.
As the rest of the dogs in group 7 were being checked out, we waited outside the ring.
After the results were tabulated, we were all called back into the ring. I'm thinking,
surely we've got to place......I can't go home empty handed. The 4th runner up is......not
Hunter........the 3rd runner up is Old English Sheepdog #???? (not Hunter).....oh, are
they going to place two sheepdogs ?????.....the second runner up is......not
Hunter.....Arrggghhhhh.....getting kinda scared .....the winner of the group is
........OLD ENGLISH SHEEPDOG #752 "HUNTER".......my jaw was on the
ground.........this was a huge win for us.
I was walking around completely buzzed, I couldn't believe it. OK...back to reality, next
the winners from each group faced off for Puppy of the Year. Each dog goes in the
remaining four rings for review. By the time we got to the fifth ring, we were tired. As I
stacked Hunter's front legs, he let out a little grrrrr, then snapped his head back with
this big smile on his face and air-clicked me. He got a big kiss on the nose for that
little burst of play-energy. Through out each of the six rings, he stacked and moved
really well. I was very proud of him. Once all the group winners had gone through their
paces and the results tallied, we were all called back into the ring. The runner up to
Puppy of the Year is.......some kind of pointer.........and now, the Puppy of the Year for
2000 is......Doberman Pincher. Ah well, both dogs were really impressive and worthy of the
win.
