(Doug and Hunter's Sixth Show)
Conquered Canada......now, the world !!!
Well, it gives me great pleasure to tell you all, that after six shows, Hunter is now a
Canadian Champion !!!! We pretty much took the summer off. The last show we did was July
1st, where we realized that Hunter had two fewer points than we thought. Fortunately, we
picked up two points that weekend, so it helped. This past weekend was a four day show. We
entered all four days......yes, we are getting serious about this show thing.
The show was at a campsite in Long Sault, Ontario. I'd never been there before. What a
gorgeous location. It is made of of a string of islands, all nicely maintained. The
weather was in the high 70's, with a nice breeze. The rings were all nice and BIG, so the
judges were actually able to see the dogs move (I found it pretty dumb at a couple of
outdoor shows this year to have small rings where you can't take more than 5 steps before
you have to turn. I mean, how can you properly judge a herding group, if you can't see
them move???). Since the show was at a campsite, we brought Mike and Molly with us.
Barbara and Sally brought a couple of extra's as well. We had a good size area, all fenced
in, crates, toys etc.
Hunter finished on Sunday with a Best of Winners. We bumped him up to Specials for
Monday's show. Hunter was really pumped on Monday. He was bouncing around the house all
morning.....just full of himself. As we approached the site, he barked at a car in front
of us, then a cyclist (probably the first time he's barked in the car). He told them to
get behind him.......he owns the road. Oh, he was cocky !!! We had a nice picnic, then I
got him all prepped. As we walked over to the ring, he was still feisty.....not unruly or
misbehaving, but he was walking like he owned the place .....to quote Martha Stewart,
"This is a good thing".
As we were standing around waiting for the German Shepherds to finish, a guy came up and
asked if he could film Hunter. Carol mentioned that she saw him filming him on Sunday. He
shot about 5 minutes of Hunter and I just standing and looking around. Finally, the
Shepherds finished. I was called first into the ring. There were seven of us in there,
with Hunter and I at the head. The ring was huge!! Hunter stacked right away. The judge
stood back and looked over the group, then sent us around together. We were in the same
ring on Sunday, and I'd noticed that some of the handlers cut the ring short and only took
a small tour. Since this was our last show for a while, I thought I'd give the judge a
good look at Hunter's movement. So, we did the whole ring. Since we were first, Hunter and
I stopped just short of the judge, and Hunter followed me just off to the side, to give
the judge a good profile. She went over him carefully, then sent us on a
down-and-back.....so far, so good....then around the ring again. As we got to the end of
the line, he hammed it up a bit.....stacking....focused on me....head up showing off his
neck......It would have been nice to finish the fabulous weekend with a rosette, but we
had to settle for Best of Opposite. Hunter's aunt Darci took the breed.
