(Doug and Hunter's Second Show)

Well, we had our second show in Nepean, Ontario (Ottawa area) over the weekend. We washed Hunter's whites the night before and put booties on him to take him outside (see.....we are learning). When we got to the arena, Hunter was very uncomfortable as soon as we walked inside the
complex. His head went down and he sleeked down the stairs. I found this very strange because he is use to being out in public and has never shown fear or hesitation towards anything. The previous show, he walked into the pace like he owned it. Anyways, we got him all brushed out and we went to the ring. We led the pack around the ring. Still, Hunter was
not himself. As we cornered, the skirt along the ring waved and spooked him. I had to stop and get him calmed down. He finished the lap.....That day, he took Best Puppy and Reserve Winner.

I spoke to Barbara that evening and she suggested that perhaps I was more tense and that Hunter had picked up on it. Hmmm quite possible. The next day, we took a more relaxed approach. Hunter walked into the complex with his head high and his chest out (it was looking good). As soon as we got into the ring, he got skittish again. In fact, on our
first lap, he tried climbing out of the ring !!! The judge came over and spoke to Hunter and put the other dog ahead of us, hoping that Hunter would follow. That seemed to do the trick. We took Best Puppy and Reserve Winner again. Next up was the group. Round and around we went....stacking...looking more comfortable.......Hunter got the nod !!
Now, we had to hang around three hours to do the Best Puppy in Show
(like last weekend). We went outside and relaxed a bit......played
cards....chatted with the other OES people......killed time !!

30 minutes to go, we got Hunter back onto the table and gave him a fresh touch up. We went to watch the Best in show comp. I was getting a little anxious.....Hunter climbed up on Sally's lap (Barbara's partner). He was just being a goof but he seemed relaxed. Adults finished......puppies
were up next. One last touch up.......Hunter trots into the ring....head high. We each had our turn....we were all lined up doing a final stack.....I grabbed Hunters collar and pulled his head up......he stuck his chest out and just froze.....the judge turns toward the table and picks up the rosette......he walked to the head of the line......then along the line......right to the back.......turns.....heads back towards the front...and handed it to Hunter !!!!! Hunter took Best Puppy in Show
on his second show and final puppy competition !!!!!

Needless to say, we are very proud of our little boy. The judge use to show OES many years ago and said that Hunter is really really nice.

His next show is in two weeks and it will be his first show competing in the open class. (his birthday is the day before the competition starts).

I must say that my limited show experience has been very positive. I would like some advice on getting Hunter more comfortable and at ease in the ring. We go to handling class each week and he seems great. I do not know what to expect at the next show.
