(Doug and Hunter's First Show)
Hunter and I both had our first show this Saturday and Sunday in Iberville, Quebec. Hunter
and I have been taking handling classes for the past couple of months and were making
pretty good progress. There's so much to keep track of.....fluffing the bum, head, pushing
down the chest, shoulders, pulling the head up, stacking him properly, restacking him
properly, keeping an eye on the judge and most important of all, enjoying ourselves.
Hunter was entered in the senior puppy class. The first day, he was up against two other
males, one being his litter mate. I think I may have ticked off the judge because I was
taking too long setting him up and she had to repeat her motioning signals (I was first in
line). However, we did manage to take the class. We then went back again but ended up
taking Winners Reserve. All in all, not bad for our first outing.
Sunday, we were on at 10 am. We left home at 6:30am, figuring we'd be back by noon. We got
out of the van, Carol had Hunter, I had Barbara's girl, Crunchie. We were just hanging
around on the grass, while Barbara parked the van. When we got inside with the dogs on the
table......something didn't seem right. We checked our shoe's.....they were
clean.....checked both bums, they seemed clean. Both Hunter and Crunchie had walked in a
mushy poop outside, while under our care !!!
Things were not starting well. We quickly got them cleaned up, brushed out, puffed up and
looking fancy.
Hunter and I went in first. This time, I set him up quickly. The judge
came over, grabbed his head and said "My, aren't you a cutie".......things were
beginning to look up !!! He took the class.....we went back in and took, Winners, Best
Puppy in breed, Best of Winners, then "THE BREED !!!!!". What a rush.....after
walking out.....someone said we had an hour before the group judging. Hunter and I went
out for some fresh air and a pee (Hunter). We came back in and were just hanging around.
Carol looked over and said "THE GROUP IS IN".....we ran over and got in the
ring. We placed fifth in the group. I think if I'd been better prepared and stacked him
well, that we could've done better but, still, to be pulled is quite good. Next, puppy
group......this time, we were ready. We stacked, fluffed, patted, watched the
judge.....walked, trotted....stacked....waited....trotted again......she's getting ready
to choose.....waiting...trotting.....the nod goes to........Hunter !!!! He took puppy
group !!!
By this point, we've got a handful of ribbons, a rossette, a prize and 4 or 5 points. It's
11 am, and we've got 6 hours to wait for Best puppy in show. It was a long wait, Hunter
was very patient and slept quite a bit of the time. It was the same judge that gave him
puppy group, so I was pretty excited. Plus, when I had our picture taken, she mentioned
that "His movement is just lovely". We got in the ring with all the other
puppies. She was watching him very carefully. When we did a "down and back"
people were really applauding and that seemed to really give Hunter a jolt of energy. His
head was way up and he was moving like a sheepdog. But alas, a whippet got the nod. It was
a long day and a lot of fun. The OES people are really a special crowd. We got a lot of
help and encouragement.
Next weekend, we're in Nepean, Ontario where we do it again.
Cheers,
Doug and the gang
